One of the most striking changes was the removal of the atypical "tower" that has marked so many prior Imperial starship designs. Tian engineers discovered a fundamental flaw in the design usage of the command tower, and while developing the prototype model discovered that with the removal of the tower the ship became more maneuverable and required less energy to sustain the shield deflector system. By integrating the newly engineered regenerative shielding technology that was discovered during the development of the M/SSD Eradicator, the engineers were able to transfer a greater amount of energy to other critical systems. As a result, the ISD-III boasts one-third more firepower over it's predecessor the ISD-II. In addition, missle and torpedo launchers were added to the design, providing the ship both an increased anti-starfighter and anti-starship combat capability. During the design phase engineers and technicians were able to make more space for more support craft and fighters, thereby increasing the total number squadrons to nine (84 fighters). Additional space was made for berthing of more stormtroopers, as well as providing more ground support armor and a readily available pre-fabricated garrison base for immediately deployment for planetary conquest and control.
